The reading passage discussed the problem of the effects of wildfire on national parks which indicating the "Let it Burn" policy to be impractical while the professor's lecture deals with the same issue and supports the "Let it Burn" policy.
The professor gives out three specific reasons to support her claim.
Firstly the reading passage states that the wildfire caused regional devastation of plant species which the land was scorched to be wastelands.
The professor countered the author's argument by pointing out that the scorched lands allow extra opportunities for smaller plants that needed light to thrive in turn increasing the diversity in Yellowstone.
The seeds that needed extra heat to open up were allowed to grow as well.
Obviously the professor's argument is more persuasive.
Moreover as the author of the reading passage suggests that the scorched lands chased away wildlife such as deer and elks the professor indicates that the smaller plants that had opportunity to grow also allowed smaller animals such as rabbits and hares to survive by feeding on those small plants.
Thus bigger predators can prey on rabbits and hares and thrive gradually thereby increasing the animal diversity in Yellow Stone.
The professor's argument definitely offered a better explanation.
Finally the professor asserts that the fire in 1988 happened because of low rainfall unexpected strong wind and the encountering of many other negative factors which are rare and such a big fire never occur ever after which in turn would not greatly affect tourism.
This argument definitely overwhelmed the author's argument that the fire lowered the tourism attraction and had negative effect on local economy.
