This is how we began our first professional development workshop at the beginning of MVA Shanghai’s spring semester. The exercise put into practice some of the fundamental goals we have for our teaching: creative active collaborative and engaging activities that build student confidence while strengthening their fundamental skills.

Our teachers come from a broad range of backgrounds with a great diversity of experiences. The goal of our professional development program is to help share all the skills we bring to MVA Shanghai while implementing best practices to ensure the highest quality student-centered learning.

Teaching requires constant energy and the best teachers are always continuing to learn new ways to engage students to inspire their creativity and to ensure that they gain the skills to continue as life-long learners. From developing project-d assignments to collaborating with students about curriculum choices we want students to be invested in what they’re doing. If students feel ownership over and pride in their learning they’re far more likely to perform at their best. While we always use our expertise to guide students’ experiences their own voices have an essential role in the life of our school.

This semester we’ll continue to offer a number of workshops that help expand teachers’ toolboxes—their collection of resources—for providing the best possible education. We’ve already begun expanding our use of Schoology and online learning management program that helps students stay better organized and gives them access to frequent feedback about their performance.

Future workshops will include strategies for increasing discussion-d learning sometimes known as the Harkness Method (a teaching strategy developed and used at Phillips Exeter one of the very best private schools in the United States—where Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg went to school amongst many other famous alumni). We’ll be giving teachers guidance on and resources for better integrating technology in their teaching. We’ll also be working to increase connections between classes and departments modeling the types of interdisciplinary learning and work that students will need for success in college and beyond.
