近期，在常州威雅学校小学部四年级鲨鱼班的英语课堂上，学生们对“食物”这一主题做了探究。学生们先是了解了一些菜肴的原材料，然后知道了获取这些材料的方式，进而通过影响领略到了稻田美景，最后，还简单了解了食品加工。

 

 

　　盘子里的食物从何而来？你最近一次思考这个问题是在什么时候？你有没有想过你最喜欢的菜肴原料是如何种植或生产的？我们如何判断冰箱里或超市里的食物是否安全？你最喜欢的菜是什么？这些是常州威雅四年级的学生们在一节英语课上被问到的问题。

　　When was the last time you thought about where the food on your plate came from? Have you ever wondered exactly how the ingredients of your favourite dishes are grown or produced? How can we check whether the food in your fridge or in the supermarket is safe to eat? What are your favourite dishes? These are the questions the grade 4 students were asked at the beginning of one of the English lessons in WASCZ.

 

 

 

　　鲨鱼班的学生们最近进行了一系列关于食物的探索和研究！学生们首先为自己喜欢的菜肴取了一个好听的名字，然后一起研究了制作这些菜肴所需要用到的原材料。我们了解到，一些原料来自当地的农场，一些原料则可以通过进口的方式获取。我们还对中国可以广泛出口的农产品进行了了解，真的太有意思了！但是吃什么是安全的？我们可以从哪里获得有机食品？我们应该选择全食吗？“有机”和“全”食品之间有什么分别？我们进一步探索了这个问题。

　　Shark class had a series of lessons researching all about food! First they named their favourite dishes then we looked at the ingredients that are used to make them. We learned that some ingredients come from local farms some can be imported and even had a look at the products that are widely exported from China! So fascinating! But what is safe to eat? Where can we get organic food from? Shall we choose whole food? What is even the difference between “organic” and “whole” food? We researched all about this.

 

 

 

　　鲨鱼班的孩子们还学习了不同的农业类型，例如梯田农业、屋顶农业和水培农业。这些概念在初次接触的时候难免会感到很复杂，但是通过直观清晰的影像我们领略到了菲律宾漫山遍野成片的美丽稻田，寸土寸金的香港在屋顶上也可以大作农业文章，而水培养殖法在全球越来越受欢迎。鲨鱼班的孩子们随后以小组为单位，撰写了研究报告。孩子们团队配合地非常好，对指定菜肴的研究深入透彻，因此研究报告的完成度非常高。

　　Shark class also learned about different types of farming such as terraced farming rooftop and hydroponic farming. Some of them seemed complicated so we watched videos and learned that very beautiful rice fields can be found in the Philippines rooftop farms can be found in Hong Kong and hydroponic farming is getting more and more popular across the globe. This was followed by a research report writing. Sharkies worked well in teams researched certain dishes and produced very impressive research reports.

 

 

　　烘焙活动 Baking Activity

　　为了更好地理解这个主题，我们还学习了食品标签的工作原理，学习了如何通过食品标签了解营养价值，避免食用含有有害化学物质的食品。这个主题包含了相当广泛的复杂词汇，因此，为了让它更有趣、更容易消化，我们举办了一次烘焙活动！通过复习生词和玩拼字比赛，我们制作了免烤巧克力蛋糕和奶昔。鲨鱼班的孩子们不仅复习了新词汇，还把学到的知识带到了现实生活中。不少学生回家用课堂上学到的烘焙方法为家人制作了奶昔和免烤巧克力蛋糕。真的是非常甜蜜的学习体验。

　　To give a better understanding of the topic we also learned how food labelling works how to check the nutritional value of each product and avoid food containing harmful chemicals. This topic includes quite a big range of complicated vocabulary therefore to make it more fun and easier to digest we held a baking activity! Through reviewing the new words and playing spelling bee games we made no-bake chocolate cakes and milkshakes. What a fascinating way of learning! Not only did Sharkies review the new vocabulary but also applied it to real life situations. This all was spiced up by new cooking skills which some of our students used right after the class: they went home and made milkshakes and no-bake chocolate cakes for their whole family. What a treat!
